555 astable oscillator to increase voltage

motterpaul
I just moved to San Diego and one of the first people I met is a long-time boutique pedal maker with a company called SIBFX. This guy has a method to use 555 timer chips to create voltages high enough to create very high wattage amps in small boxes. Now, he has been designing effects for 30 years and definitely knows what he is doing.

Most interesting is his claim that he can get up to 70 Vdc from one of these chips. From what I gathered, he uses these 555 astable oscillators coupled with  (four diode) rectifier circuits.

Does anyone have any projects or practical experience with this approach?

I'm working on a 1W tube amp designed by a guy over at diysb that uses a 555 to boost the voltage up to as much as 190V. http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=111758.msg1029422#msg1029422
