A couple of general building questions

Kalimna
Greetings folks,
First off, apologies if these have been asked before, but i couldnt work out the search times.
So, im onto around my 15th build (or so) and feel fairly confident putting things together - and most of them work first time, even started trying different ic's and transistors where possible.
However, i'd like to know what is tge best way of laying out the cables inside the enclosure? Should the grounds be kept as separate as possible? Tight into the corners? Where wires are close or have to cross over, what's the best way to do this? Should wires be twisted together? Does it actually make a difference outside of high-grain situations?

My other question relates to capacitors (again, sorry)  - when a layout calls for an electrolytic whose value could be substituted with a multilayer ceramic, is there any siuation  where that shouldnt be done?

Again, thanks for your advice and this fantastic resource.

Adam

Not sure about wiring RE: twisted or not, but I'd keep in and output wires far apart in a high gain circuit. With modulation effects, ground wiring is important, but that's more about having a separate path from the timing cap to ground that does not run close to any part of the audio section ground to reduce potential for ticking.

As for caps, I only find MLCCs up to maybe 5/10 uF, so many of the  places you might see an electrolytic cap specified in a schematic (power filter, vref supply etc) the values may well be over 10uF anyway, but if you can find the required value, go for it - I often use tiny 1uF mlcs in the signal path. The rule with electro caps is that you can't always sub in a polarised electro (or tantalum bead) in certain places in some circuits. Occasionally, you'll see a cap marked "np" for non-polarised to flag up known problems.

Nocentelli - thanks for your reply. I think it confirms what I thought, so thats good :) I suppose it is then just a question of practice to make things nice and neat. My next pedal to be boxed up is an EHX Small Clone into a 1590B, which will be a test I think! Without the wiring, it all fits into the enclosure if the 'board is placed in at an angle slightly underneath the jack sockets!

Again, thanks,

Adam
