A new one from BYOC for Bass Players

johnk
I just saw that BYOC introduced their first overdrive specifically designed for bass this week. using their schematic, I made my own vero for it, built it and tested it. IMO, it's a pretty nice sounding OD for bass. It's basically a modified OD-1/tubescreamer with more bass,a treble and bass tonestack, and a clean blend control.

here's a clip from BYOC to demonstrate it:

here's pic of my tested vero on my test strip:

after playing with it for a while, IMO, the blend circuit design in this pedal just doesn't work properly. it seems to have phasing issues in different areas of the blend control so i'm going to redesign my own version of it with a completely different blend circuit.

I've been using this AMZ splitter / buffer in many bass-builds. Works and sounds great! Maybe you could integrate it into your layout?

Here's a small layout I did for it.

If anyone finds it useful, I've been hooking it up like this:
input - splitter
output 1 - distortion circuit
output 2 - blend pot lug 1 (or 3)
distortion circuit output - blend pot lug 3 (or 1)
blend lug 2 - output (or to volume pot)

I can't remember which lugs excatly or value of the pot though..
So you need to experiment alittle there.

cheers

well, i'll never box up the BYOC  one since the blend is poorly designed. I ended up designing my own bass version of an OD-1 with a treble and bass tonestack. it doesn't even require a clean blend since at minimum gain it's completely transparent and I prefer to keep the layout smaller with only four controls (drive, treble, bass and volume) so it'll fit in a 1590B.

I did build a separate blend & boost daughterboard for it but I don't think that i'm going to add it to it.

Hi John and Freppo,
thanks for this, it looks interesting.

However what looks more interesting to me at the moment is your AMZ buffer/splitter layout.
A friend of mine has just asked me about the possibility of converting his Ernie Ball volume pedal to active.
A bit of research shows that the guys online offering this service use twin buffers, so do you think that this buffer would be suitable for the job?

Also would I need to swap the 250K pot in the volume pedal to a 25k version?

Sorry for dragging this off subject!

as far as blenders, I've used IvIark's split n blend with some of my pedals with great results.

if a blender pedal requires a phase switch since the pedal puts the signal out of phase (like a Marshall Guv'nor), I use this one:

John,

Is the phasing thing only an issue when using Bass with a pedal (like the aforementioned guv'nor)? I haven't heard much on this topic, so I'm curious.

a lot of pedals reverse the phase, including the boss OD-1.
I saw a pretty big list of the ones that do on FSB.

I just finished testing my own version of a  Boss OD-1 modded for bass and IMO, it's 100X better than the BYOC version which i'll never end up boxing. I did end up adding a blend control and a boost circuit to mine, and my blend control works perfect.
6 knobs: Drive, Bass, Treble, OD level, Blend, and Master Volume.
I ended up making the main circuit on its own board, and then made a daughterboard for the blend & boost. that way it'll fit in a 1590B with no problems.
