Can i use a Linear Pot instead of a Log Pot?

Devilidol
its very hard to find logarithmic pots in my country!..in the local shops when i ask them logarithmic pots they give me linear pots!..i can get em online, but one logarithmic pot will cost almost 5 times more than the linear pot...does it really make a difference? or can i just use a linear pot?

i do know about the linear curve curve! and logarithmic curve and all that!..but personally would like my pots to give 50% when it is turned half way than 10% :D

Hey man. Well the simple answer is yes, you can aways substitute a log for a linear or antilog of the same value. Even though you know about the curve let's look at it for a sec.

When you look at the curve, you can see that the difference in how the resistance is changed, which in turn will change in how our ears perceive the change in the circuit. I can't say for sure if you're going to get the exact percentage change you said you're looking for, but you can sub if and see what happens.

As far as ordering them online, have you looked at tayda? Not sure where you are, but pots are $0.50USD, which is dirt cheap.

thanks a lot for the reply!, i, here the linear pots will cost me ($0.5USD) but the logaritmic ones will cost me about ($4.72USD)  screwed up isnt it?...not just that its very hard to find jfets too, again we get em online but they want me purchase a kilo of those... the local shop doesnt have them..the next closest one is 37miles away! basically its pretty screwed up...ill probably will have to import it from china! that more cheaper than purchasing it from my country

That's insane. Definitely check out tayda. They've got a lot of the main parts we use and dirt cheap. Most jfets are around $0.50usd each. They're from Thailand, and on eBay they have 2 stores: Thiashine and tayda. Thiashine is usually a little cheaper.

Oh and here's some great reading on pots and how they work.

Lol. Yea. Just keep in wind that the shipping is proportional to the order amount. I think my last order was like $350usd, and shipping was around $18usd. Also, there's a thread with the coupons for 20% off that pop up time to time, which usually covers shipping and a little on the order.

Don' forget Tayda has a website:

http://www.taydaelectronics.com/

I usually order from the website rather than the ebay shop, as the prices are even better, and postage is very cheap!

As Rocket says, don't forget to look at the "Tayda Coupon" thread at the top of the Open Chat page, as they usually offer 10 or 15% discount, every 4-6 weeks. It can really pay off if you make up a shopping list, and wait for the coupon.

If you want to be informed of the coupons, sign up to their Facebook page.

I pretty much only use my local dealer for the odd value/part I forgot. Sucks for the local dealer, but then again half of the time I do go to them they don't even have the parts I need. And the parts I do need often cost 4 times as much.

Tayda is ubercheap, so maybe not the best of comparisons, but if its still cheaper to order a DPDT switch from a Dutch internet store, including shipping, then it is to go to the local store, then that local store is in trouble as far as I'm concerned.
