Capacitor Symbols

ichilton
Hi,

Looking a number of the layouts, it looks like different types of capacitors have different symbols.

I can't however find a list of these - is there one anywhere?

The electrolytics and arial electrolytics are obvious, but the difference between polyester film, ceramic disc and multilayer ceramic seems to be more confusing...

Thanks,

Ian

To be honest it doesn't really matter which type you use and pf value caps tend to only be available in ceramic or multi layer ceramic types. My preference for everything else is poly box caps up to 1uf and I tend to use electrolytic caps for everything higher but only because I bought a job lot of them a while back.

Ah, cool - thanks.

Will switching between the same values in different types (i.e between ceramic disc, multi-layer and poly box) give a noticeable difference in the sound, or would it be too insignificant to be able to tell?

Thanks,

Ian

Subtle at best, but it's something you need to answer yourself because everyone is different with that.  The difference would be considerably more obvious if you changed the cap value and so I really don't think the type is anything to worry about.  I use polyester or multilayer ceramic up to 1u, and then electrolytics or tantalums depending on whether I'm stuck for space.  They all make great sounding effects.

Just putting a Tayda order in.

Which of these would you use for the *nf capacitors?

10NF 0.01UF 100V 5% MYLAR FILM CAPACITORS
10NF 0.01UF 100V 5% POLYESTER FILM BOX TYPE CAPACITOR

The Mylar's are about 1/2 the price.

Will there be any difference in tone? - is it worth ordering some of both and trying both or will it not really make a difference?

Thanks,

Ian

Get the cheaper ones, in my opinion, the minute change in tone wont warrant spending the extra, although that is of course, entirely up to you.
Thanks
