Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra

Yes, friends, I know that Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra was released few days ago, but I (and a lot of Sabbath fans, I think)would like to build this little beast, I will stay on the TagBoardEffects to any eventual post of this project!

Trust me, this one won't take long before it's been traced.  The only question is whether I'll get in first with the layout or Miro.  Or indeed any of the other vero boys who have been doing some fantastic layouts on here.

i'm telling you when a layout for this one shows up i'm going be building it at work while i should be preping for my next class. the only problem is that i think that would be a bad idea, cause i would be able to stop, and my kids would be stuck waiting.

Well, they finally figured out the circuit over at FSB:

http://www.freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=25043&p=249092#p249092

Looks like another mu amp-based topology with some interesting filtering and some unusual FETs.

Time for a vero??

HELL YEA IT'S TIME FOR A VERO!!!! I'll have a look and see if I can get a layout, but I'm sure someone will beat me too it. I'm currently working on the mad professor amber od.

I've given it a try and uploaded it in Contributions.
I'm quite sure it matches the schematics but let me know if you see anything wrong.

has anyone got a suggestion for a workalike, or close enough, alternative to the 5x mpf4393 transistors?

bitsbox and mouser haven't go them, doctor tweak is still down, and ebay charging £4 each (so forget it).

£20 for five trannies to try something i might not even like isn't going to happen, so am open to all suggestions re functioning substitutes.

many thanks.

I used PN4393 which I found pretty cheap. I've used them in a few circuits including the Sabbra Cadabra and they seem to work/sound just fine

thanks for the recommendations rocket and travis.

the bulgarians 2n4393 look interesting. £6 for four pack much better but i need five, so that doubles. and will they work as well or at all?

the PN4393 on ebay £4-£5 each. £1 each on mouser but they charge £12 delivery for five transistors so that adds up to the same thing.

what about these? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MMBF4393-TRANSISTOR-BY-FAIRCHILD-10-PCS-ON-A-SEALED-TAPE-SOT-23-SMD-/251274521040?hash=item3a8120e9d0:m:mmi63FtuKz1Gytn58deQL4w

obviously i'd have to put stalks on the to go through hole.

i'll try it with anything i have hanging around in my bitsbox (observing pinouts) and report back.

Tabby, send our Bulgarian Great Uncle an ebay message, and ask for the quantity you want to buy, instead of the quantity he is listing.Tell him you are a contributor here.

He will help you out.

Those SMD ones look fine and cheap, and you can get adapter boards from BItsbox.

thanks beaker. have just bought some of the smds to play with as cheap as hell and may be identical spec, and if the sabbra works with them will message and get the posh nos ones from uncle. maybe he's had them since new and can remember the days when he wasn't behind the times?

Yeah, then you can pick up the pieces and make them into something new - it's what we do.

I have some of the Bitsbox adapter boards spare. If you want them I can post them down - I offered you some Russian diodes whe other week, that offer still stands. If you send me your address I will get them posted - and no I don't want anything for them.

Tabby unfortunately I bought these immediately when the schem appeared which was really the first time any DIY pedal builders were interested in this part. I'm looking around now and it seems like the good deals are pretty much over, I'm not seeing the ones that I bought anymore.

The SMD parts should work, but you need to buy some adapter boards for them. The SMD parts are incredibly small, and I don't think you'll be able to attach legs directly to the part.

At this point in time the ones from Bulgaria may be the best option

hey travis, i know. all this neolib croney forum's fault. feeding the capitalist beast by stoking demand. everything was so much cheaper when we had no use for it.

i got a cap reel of ten of the smd ones for virtually no p, so will play with them and see what happens. i have managed to attach offcut resistor legs to pins on a smd cmos chip before and that wasn't too traumatic.

i will bring my anarchist mind control powers to bear on it.
