Charge Pump and MAX1044 Question

Has anyone here run into any problems with using the max1044 in your charge pump?  

Just curious as I've read some conflicting build reports which claim the max1044 is a complete headache.

Some recommend the tc1044scpa as an alternative...any thoughts or experience?
