Cold solder joints (arrggh!)

I know exactly what you mean with the sockets. Did it by any chance have a jumper underneath it that stopped it from sitting flat against the board? I was worried one of my builds wouldn't work because it was such a pain trying to get solder onto the pins that didn't fully come through the holes, but luckily it was fine.

That's exactly what it was.  There was a double link under the socket and I wasn't careful enough when soldering the socket down.  The end result was the socket sitting on the board with a tilt in it.  The pin in question just barely made it through the board and I thought although I couldn't see the lead sticking out thru the solder, it still made contact.  I was wrong.  :)
