This is probably worth a build for its uniqueness.  That feedback network is definitely different than the usual op amp tube screamer design!  Need to see if I have a 1M or 2M trimmer.  I believe D3 = 1N4148, like D1 and D2 (unless you use LEDs there).

I would likely want to redo the layout to get the width down to 21 or 22 columns, so that it fits in a 1590B more conveniently.

In general, I like the good ol' 741 if you plan to have the op amp clip.  But with diodes in the feedback loop, any of the usual single op amps should be fine.  I'm really curious about the JFET in the feedback loop - trying to understand how this thing works.  

BTW - I noticed your vero layout uses a 4558 dual.  You could simply go with a single op amp configuration so you could substitute a TL071, LM741, LF351 etc.
