Dogboy Distortion

This post was updated on .
Hi folks

I've made my second design, and I think some of you will find this one interesting. :)
It's a high gain distortion / fuzz hybrid that I call the Dogboy Distortion.
100% original design. I haven't copied or modified any existing circuit.

I've very happy how it turned out. Very agressive and cool. Almost too brutal lol..
It sounds kinda broken, in a good way..

I hope you dig it :)

Here's the schematic:

and a verified layout:

That's pretty sick man. That reminds me that I kinda have to get my ass moving on my own designs lol. Nice circuit.

Re: Dogboy Distortion

Thanks :)

Yeah, it's great fun cooking up your own circuits! I get kinda obsessed with it, playing the guitar and tweaking values until my fingers and ears hurt lol

Would love to see some homebrew stuff, not just mods of existing circuits.
Please share if you have anything! :)

Oh I have tons of schems, just that none of it is tested yet  lol. But I sure will share with everyone when anything is done.
Looking forward to seeing more from you man!

Sounds freaking awesome. Thanks for sharing! Gonna add this to my build list!

I gotta place another large parts order soon. I'm out or almost out of many basic stock components...

Thanks! It's a mean sounding little circuit alright :)
I would be really honored if someone would build my stuff!

Hi Freppo,
Thinking of building your design this week, just wondering, is the 470uf cap crucial, does it have to be that high a value?
Thanks

Hi Dave
Awesome! Yes, the 470uF is critical i'm afraid. If a lower value is used the maximum gain will be lower/weaker. It can be omitted (with a link insted) and it will sound about the same, but it will be alot noisier.

Another cirtical part is the 1N34A diode (somehow other kind of diodes makes the circuit oscillate). The second transistor can be either BC549B or a BC550B, as they are basically the same. But you could experiment with other transistors in that position if you don't have any BC549B/BC550B.

The clipping LED's light up very bright in this circuit when playing, so I thought about putting one of both outside for my next build :)

Re: Dogboy Distortion

Ah cheers mate, no worries I'll just stick a 470uf cap in my next tayda order. Cool, think I might have to mount those too.
Thanks

Re: Dogboy Distortion

Freppo
Hans J on the freestompboxes forum built this one with sucess, yay! :)
If anyone is going to build this one, the C3 cap need to be flipped around (cathode to ground)
I will update the layout later when i'm at my stationary computer.
