EHX Bad Stone

Alex
This post was updated on .
Used a modded version from Lectric-FX:
http://lectric-fx.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/BloodStone1.pdf
Had to use a lot of standing resistors to make it fit in a 1590BB box.
It's not verified but it should match the schematic.
                      "LAYOUT UPDATED"
- Moved 100nF cap from Base to Emitter of Q2
- Reversed Q1
- Removed a cut between CD4049 pin 5 and 10K resistor

Very impressive sir.
It is tempting as I have been eyeballing the reissues. I'm just not sure I want to give up that much space for the DIY. Chances are I'll get bored and do it anyway.
Either way thanks for sharing.

God damn. I was hoping we could get this on vero. This thing is scary, but I know I'm going to to have to build this. Also, talk about an early birthday gift. Might have to stay in tomorrow and build this......

Alex you are the best. I am so building this!

I remember someone was selling some big muff repro enclosures. I'd love to track one down for this build

Re: EHX Bad Stone

Alex
Thank you all.
Sergio sent me the schematic and asked me to draw this.
It's not that great looking with all those standing resistors (that's why I've used the first version of DIY Layout Creator) but it was the only way to make it fit in a BB box.
I've left enough space to lay those 470u and 100u caps down.
The original uses a CD4009 instead of a CD4049UBE.
If you wish to use the original IC you need to add another link between pin 14 and 16.

Thanks a lot, Alex! Its smaller than I thought! I'm going to start this evening with this, I'm not the fastest builder/verifier, but Ill try to finish this weekend or during next week, Sunsay its my birthday, so I think this will be a day of "take your hands off of thesolder iron" and I have to check if I have some 4049ube at home, i think that i have some... So great! What a gift Alex!  Ill make you all know how it goes. Thanks again!

Great job Alex!  Thanks for all of your contributions to this site.

PS:  I need to order a bigger piece of vero for this one!

Just ordered my big piece of vero especially for this project.  Need also to get a 3PDT toggle switch.

If you need one Frank I have one I can probably get it in the mail today. Whatever it cost me is what it will cost you.

Btw, I have my fingers crossed this one works. I didn't realize it was basically a small stone with added controls. Not to mention I watched a video on YouTube from EHX about this, well it was a nano but still, the mr mathews talks about the history of this and i and no idea. Really incredible and an absolutely amazing pedal.

Re: EHX Bad Stone

Thanks Zach but I can find a switch.  I'm going to a mini toggle 3PDT as this switches between the phaser and vibrato modes (no foot switch needed).

I also think this is more than a Small Stone on the phaser side, and seems to get a deeper phasing.  I have a vintage Small Stone to compare it to, so I can comment on that once I have this built (which probably will be after yours is built!).

Now worries. I figured you were going to use a toggle. I've got a bunch of them in my stock as well.

I'm curious to know how they compare. I was just going by what I got from that demo.

I really wasn't into phasers until I buit the one for a customer. Now I'm stuck on a s phaser kick. Lol this is definitely on my build list.

I took my time with this one, being a big one, i knew that it would be easy to fall into troubles if something was ouy of place. i cutted vero, holes, links, and populated being sure with my multimeter, added the 2m2 resistor from input to ground and the diode and resistor at voltage in i changed for 47 ohms. But i think my board looks as the printed layout. Im comparing now schematic with vero, in case theres something different, i see connections differ at least in the 4049. From input signal and the surroundings of first tl74 i think they are perfect. If someone sees something strange, please post it here.
 Thank you!

The Small Stone has a single rate knob and the color switch.  The regular phaser mode sounds great but you can't dial in the depth like you can with the Bad Stone.  The color mode sounds cool and funky but I don't use it very much.

I'm also wanting to try the fixed (manual) mode, which I think can enhance an overdrive or distortion in a positive way, much like the cocked wah sound you hear in a lot of Led Zeppelin tracks (like the lead break at the end of "Whole Lotta Love").

Check out this demo (and the manual mode demo at 4:40):

got you mate!
i've found 2 small mistakes easy to fix
1-reverse q1
2-desolder 100nf from q2 base and put it one hole up at emiter
also there is a double link under the up tl074 that you might not have seen.
that's all i've found.
good luck!

and alex...great board there.the way you worked through this schem is beautiful

and one last thing i just saw.
at pin 5 of 4049, there is a cut on the left that shouldn't be there.the 10k resistor after that cut should connect VB+ with those pins and now as it is doesn't provide power to the chip.bringe the cut and you should be good to go

Re: EHX Bad Stone

Amazing indeed, following the schematic and layout its difficult, at least for me, so, thinking how to place everything... tonight ill be able to check this again.i know very little, mostly 072 and 074 ics style . This 4049 its completely new for me, just looking at schemes thought that pin16 needs to be linked to 14, and i didnt know that those ics voltage should connect to the "in" , 3,5,7,9,11,14. And as the scheme seems to link, to 16 . Those pins 13, 16 at datasheet are shown as No connect. I ll have to study a little more thank you all! Savvas, Alex i ll make you know!

Thanks Savvas!
I've checked it twice but everytime I look at layouts (before uploading them) I always move components around to improve it, risking to make new mistakes!
Always good to have a fresh pair of eyes double checking everything.
I'll fix it asap.
