Fuzz War II

Zanius
This post was updated on .
There is a lot of discussion and lots of failed builds over the first "seven transistor" version of this. The second version, which also comes in 2-3 variations, seems to be more clear. There is a traced schem in fsb and the same version is found in Fuzz dog's "Raw fuzz".  Here is my layout for it. :)

Thanks for the layout.
Found a video on a diystompboxes comparing a raw fuzz with an original fuzz war.
It nailed it, but it seemed  far more scooped, fizzy and compressed. It reminded me to my superfuzz build where I added a 10k clipping control and changed the diodes to something else. It really opened the mids like the original on the video.
Did you build one with same schematics and parts?
Cheers, Gilberto.

Nice one! I've built several of these and it's probably one of the more original big muff derivates out there. I spotted one error though, 470K resistor between base of Q3 and D2-D3 should be 43K.Just for the record: recent versions has 1N5227B (3,6V) Zener diodes in the clipping stage and the 43K resistor is changed to 12K. Gives a bit more punchy and more aggressive clipping.

Haven't built it yet, it is planned for next week :)
I used the fuzz dog's schematic, which is identical to the traced one found on fsb.

Yeah, there is always a mistake :) Thanks for spotting it and for the extra info, I will update the layout soon.

..aaand, Verified :)

Don't know how close it is to the actual Fuzz war II, but is is fuzz and all controls work properly.

I built it with a few mods and a clipping switch. Sounds killer.
It sounds like a vintage Big Muff with a crazy tone control that sounds like a kind of Envelope Filter.
In satured amp sounds like the videos.

I put MPSA18 in Q1 and increased the input cap.

Looks great!
Did you included the 12k resistor and the zeners on the switch?
Does anybody have information about the treble booster included on the superfuzz war?

I think I should put that one on my list...

@velouriafx: Wow, I like that design with the different knobs! How did you do the graphics - just toner transfer?

@traktop no, i made switchable D9Es and Schottskys. The super is probably very different since it includes the DIP switches for both modes.

@mug it's a laser engraving. Ttake a look at my instagram that has a video showing the process
