Hyperion 2 Oscillator issue...

ham_phist
Hey all,

If someone who has done this build might know a reason for why my oscillator is all wonky, I'd appreciate any assistance here. Thanks as always!

Does the Oscilation only work when ithe knob is turned practically all the way to the left or clockwise position and as you turn it clockwise it oscillates like crazy, then cuts out and just gives you feed back? If so, swap out the 100k pot for a 20k pot and make sure the OSC 3 is connect directly to the ground connection of the DC jack.  You can also swap the volume and intensity knobs to Log instead Linear and maybe drop them down to 50k for more control.

Thanks man, I appreciate the help! So there may not have been any actual issues, but just changing the pot value will fix it?

Wait, I misread your email. You are right, the oscillation is completely shut off when all the way clockwise, then when I turn it to the left it goes nuts, if you leave it be and try to play guitar through it all you hear is the oscillation. The oscillation pitch (for lack of a better way to put it) changes as you change the intensity control.

I'm pretty sure the jack is grounded to the DC but I'll make sure.

I will make sure not to cross the streams.

It should. I had the same problem and replaced it with a 20k and now there is more control. If you go to the layout page, and look at the comments section for the Hyperion 2 it's a common problem with the build. Some people also say to try to connect one of the volume pins to ground as well and it will supposedly reverse the Oscilation knob so that when you turn it all the way to the Right that's when it has the most Oscilation.

Before I swapped the 100k log for a 20k Lin I just kept the intensity knob below 50% and the oscillator turned up to around 3%.

The Hyperion 2 is an amazing pedal. Reminds me of the DOD Buzz Box but way more useful.

The first Hyperion 2 I built also sounded like ass because I was using crappy wire. I came to the forum and everyone suggested threaded wire instead of solid. I swapped all my wire out and it sounded way more lush.

Re: Hyperion 2 Oscillator issue...

thanks again! I grounded the volume at the DC jack. I had a crusty 25k pot that I stuck in there just to see what happened, same thing. if I have intensity up at all, it produces a constant tone like it did in the video that varies in pitch as you turn the knob. I swapped it out for a 10k just to see what that did, got the same result. Think it could be a problem on my board? I checked the orientation on everything and it looks like I'm good to go. No bridges that I could find. I'm just scratching my head on this one.

I am happy with the oscillator all the way "off," it's a great fuzz tone. My previous fuzz was an Astro Mess that I got on a trade (would never shell out the money for boutique pedals). I later found out the story with JHS and Devi Ever and what not. The hyperion seems to be a more full-bodied fuzz that I can get a similar tone with when the intensity is full bore. I'm happy for sure, if I can't figure it out I'll probably just take the oscillation knob out so I still have the killer fuzz. And maybe sell my astro mess...

From the comments under the layout:

"Yep, that's exactly what it is. In the fully clockwise position of the oscillation pot the ground connection is made. As you move counter clockwise more and more resistance is put between ground and the ground point of the board causing the oscillation.

So basically the ground for all your offboard hardware remains intact always, and so the oscillation pot is only affecting the ground connections on the board.

If you'd prefer ground to be connected in the counter clockwise position and then oscillation to start as you rotate clockwise, then take Oscillation 1 to (permanent) ground instead of 3." this is what I did after switching to the 20k Log pot.

Just a follow up: I think this pedal may actually be workimg as intended with the oscillation, its just not something that is super  useful. Im gonna box it up anyway because it sounds great with the osc off.  When it oscillates, the pitch created is too loud for what I'm playing to poke through.

Hilarious because a couple people seem to have had the same experience, just as you said.
