Input trough pot questions

Hi all,

I've been taking a look to two efect input modes trough a pot instead of directly to vero.

Devi Ever uses to get all of her pedals input trough a "control" pot -> Input to lug 2, lug 1 to one input cap, lug 3 to other input cap, and both of these caps to Q1 B or E.

David from D*A*M uses in some effects an input pot too, but he uses to link lugs 1-2. So finally it's Input to Lugs 1-2 -> Lugs 1-2 to an input cap, lug three to another input cap, and both ones to Q1.

Does anybody know if there's a real difference between these two ways? They seem finally to be the same, but  I always prefer to ask :)

Devi uses it as a gain control, to limit the signal going into the effect by putting resistance in the path. David uses it as a panning control between two input caps which acts as a tone control.
