I bought a Palmer power supply because I had a couple of gigs coming up and I had to have some decent power supply. But I did not give up on building an isolated power supply. I have a couple spare notebook switching power supplies, which I could use for powering a pedalboard. I was always fascinated by the Gigrig products, their modular power supply system is amazing and they are doing the same thing that I want, and I was always wondering.. what are they using? Cause their isolators are so small! Are they using some small toroidal transformer?
As I was messing around with Google, I found a Chinese site, where they opened up a Gigrig Virtual battery:
http://rocksince1978.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-58.htmlI can't see the schematic based on the picture, but it is basically just some caps for filtering, and a RECOM DC-DC converter, (RN0909S) which is doing the isolation, anyone can easily get in on mouser, yay!
I'll start building a prototype as soon parts arrive. I wanted to share this - it should help everyone build an isolated power supply, or .. "adapter" if you will.
Edit: Or you can use something like: Traco power TES 1-1219, which is doing the same thing but from 12v (I have a 12V 2A transformer sitting here, which I could use).
