I've never built that particular one, in fact I can't even remember doing the layout
, but I don't see why you should get any compression. There is no gain increase, it's a source follower and so just a unity gain buffer. The only thing that is should do is provide a high input impedance and a low output impedance. Maybe that change and the removal of any loading on your pickups is making an audible difference (although I would expect it to sound brighter if anything).
The reference voltage doesn't have any filtering. Try adding a 47u cap from the bottom row to the second from bottom row below the 100n cap (negative to ground obviously), and just see if that alters anything.
