Janglebox Issues

Bob the Builder
Hello!

I've been trying to build a janglebox compressor for the last few days, but I'm afraid I've hit a wall.

I've got no output from the effect. The inputs of the chip both get signal, but there is no output on pin 6. I am using a LM13700 in a daughterboard , and have tried 4 different chips with no success. If I put a jumper between one of the inputs (pin 2 or 3) and the output (pin6) then I get a signal coming out of the effect, however it isn't compressed or anything.

I replaced the trim pot with two 470 ohm resisters, and had to put a few in parallel to get the right values.

This is really stumping me, I've tried everything that I could think of and none of it worked. Any advice or anything would be really appreciated.

Thank you!

This doesn't look good

Looks like there's a cut between one or more of the wires and the rest of the board. It's hard to tell but make sure you don't have any component legs sticking through the board that are not completely soldered to the board

Most of your soldering looks very good but some parts do not. The way the wires are soldered to that pot looks really bad in that pic, both the solder joints and the bare wire sticking out all crazy.

Also I posted a layout for a LM13700 Janglebox which might be easier for you. I verified this myself and it's a great comp (I also did a LM13700 Dyna Comp in the forum)

You were right, It was a solder issue.

I re soldered all the joints and it worked great!

But once I tried to put it in the box the entire thing died. I took it out, and now just puts out a sort of pulsed sound when I hit the notes loud enough. It almost sounds like the effect is working in between pulses .Again, when I take the chip out and put a jumper between pins 2 and 6 I get a clean output.

This would mean that I either killed the chip or that the Q3-5 circuit that goes to pin 5 of the chip is messed up, right?

I'm really confused.

Here is a sound sample:
