thanks for the link, ham. am always interested by the spin things.

the unintended latency-induced phasing sounds like it might be a pain to work around. but even factoring that in the sounds are great for a diy build. i don’t think we have anyone here who has done anything with spin yet, and i am light years away from being able to attempt anything like that i think. so diysb might be able to advise you better re this particular project. there are half a dozen spin things there i know of that sound good.

re the diy spin-thing in general, i’m planning on heading in some sort of programming-based effect building direction next year. it seems the fv1 is the smaller and more expensive audio-dedicated option, the specialist. whereas the arduino can do perfectly acceptable audio but is a more general purpose format and so far bigger. on the other hand the arduino stuff is far more widely available and dirt cheap, while the spin option feels like a far more esoteric and expensive route. specialist option.

my instinctive feeling from what i’ve seen around is that the arduino looks by far the easiest option to get started re basic audio programming. and once you have got a feeling for the science through playing with that, you can adapt a lot of that general approach to the idiosyncrasies of the spin system. if, indeed, the arduino hasn’t caught up with spin by then, or if you are looking for smaller builds or building exclusively spin-based clones.

I'm also on a similar path, looking for the right bits and pieces from various other projects to assemble guitar pedal enclosures for the Teensy 3.x, Arduino, FV-1, Raspberry Pi, and BeagleBone Black.

They all have slightly different requirements for ADC/DAC but I hope I could use the same circuit modules for input handling guitar level impedance (preamp/buffer??) and output reamping + boost (for example, and sorry, forum requires login)

This particular project has quite a bit more on it than I would want/need for FV-1 (e.g. 8 position rotary switch and external expression input).  Perhaps a simpler general purpose FV-1 circuit derived from this might be useful?

For the more experienced, here is also a link I've found from a Italian engineer, who has designed a digital multi-fx reverb, complete with schematic & PCB layout. Based on FV-1 chip.

hey heuermh,

i know nothing of the teensy or the beaglebone, so thanks for the heads up re those projects. i don't have a login for gpcb but will see if i can work around it using search.
as for the raspberry pi, someone wise at fsb told me it was a much more basic (crude basic) platform compared to the arduino, and that between the two, arduino was far better suited to guitar effect coding. i will see if i can find the link, but that was the gist. i wish i could remember the exact reason but it was backed up with stuff that made me take it seriously. am close to pulling the trigger on that pedalshield pcb and a cheap chinese duo but trying to work out what else i would need to get started re software, ics, etc.

definitely keep us posted with your experiments. there is nothing here re coded projects as far as i know. maybe a tap tempo thing, but nothing hardcore. i would be very interested in seeing what you do. it would be nice if the circuit blocks could be chopped around. as the arduino kit tends to be 4.5v (pc standard) rather than 9v, do you think headroom will always be an issue? maybe that is an advantage the spin has over other formats. i haven't gone that far into it yet.

hey ham, i don't know if it's 'the right direction' but it's the direction i'm heading in, so i thought i'd share what i had re reasoning and illustrative links.

thanks for the link. more temptation to yield to the spin mistress.

am big on reverb atm. am in the process of building my third belton. analog just won't cut it for the kind of reverb i like. maybe a massive sheet in a disused train tunnel might, but not anything i've found in a stomp. have a hardwire reverb which is supersweet. i wonder if it's possible to import codes between the digitech reverbs? they have a few variations on the same theme now. i know there are hacks for older digitechs to do that. i think they are wildy underrated. they are a startlingly inexpensive route into the world of massive reverbs, as far as stomps go.
