I just built this reverb and it works fine - but...
If I turn the blend knob all the way CCW I get a loud hiss - so to avoid that I have to turn it back about 20% - but when I get there I have way too much reverb mixed in. I am using a Belton 3H brick. 200kB pot on the mix (I tried an A-Log but had the same problem, just in a slightly different spot). I am only using 10k on the dual gang and it is full off. This is in an effects loop with separate send & return controls but if I turn down the send I lose overall volume level (because it is a series pedal in a series loop). What I need to do is either change the mix ratio somehow, or turn down the reverb output. Or make a different reverb with the same brick. |
By the way - I realize people who do layouts with dual opamps often swap the ins from the first to the second opamp... but in this case looking at the schematic it seems maybe some things were put into the wrong section.
Here is the schematic: http://www.madbeanpedals.com/projects/1590G/Ping.pdf I am just trying to figure out why I cannot get a clean input sound when I put the blend knob on full CCW. This is making the pedal unusable for me because I have either too much noise or too much reverb. |
Hi Paul.
The layout matches the schematic and it has been verified by different people. Which things are suppose to be in the wrong section? Did you compare your voltages with those in Brian's PDF? |
I built this a few weeks back and mine is fine. I can take voltages if you need a reference. |
Thanks for replies. It's good to hear yours are fine. I decided just to build it over from scratch so I will keep you updated. If I need voltages I will ask again.
(I thought I saw that the 10p cap was in the wrong place but I don't think so now). The main thing was that I could not get a pure guitar sound (dial down the reverb/clean blend pot to 'off') without a lot of high freq 'hiss' coming up. Otherwise it did work fine, just too much reverb. |
Yip built it too and sounds lethal! Only issue I had was with switch popping. Changed the electro 1u to a non polar and it's been fine since.

completely rebuilt it and still have tons of noise on the full CCW blend pot. If I don't turn it down it's way too much reverb. I am trying to use it in an amp EFX loop - it works, but just not voiced right at all.
I wonder if rolling off some bass pre-brick would help (saw that online) - then you can blend in more reverb. Any quick ideas on what cap I might change to do that? |
Does it work normally in front of the amp? I don't use my loop but I'll try it over the weekend and let you know.
|
Yes it works normally in front. But there is still a LOT of reverb. Up front it is very susceptible to volume changes. If I play lead (single notes) it is the right amount of reverb, but on chords it is a wall of reverb. Putting it after my overdrive would help flatten out the volume changes (the clipping does that) - but that is why one puts it in the amp loop - so volume changes are under control. The thing is just that there is TOO MUCH reverb. It works fine, if that is what you want, but I I would cut it down to 25% of what I am getting if I could. I tried using a 10k dual gang and that helps. I also tried a
smaller blend pot but that caused the 10k dual to burn up (!). If
I could just get rid of the noise of the full CCW blend knob I
would be happy, but I can;t seem to do that. On 1/25/2017 1:24 PM, Ciaran Haslett

PROBLEM MOSTLY SOLVED
I decided to take out the dual "drive" pot. The layout recommends 100k, but most layouts for this brick, including the manufacturer, suggest 10k dual. Even at 10k I felt it was too much, so I just took out the pot and hard wired two 7.5k resistors. This brought the noise level and the reverb amount down to a manageable level. I think I could even go down to 5k and maybe like it better. Anyway - it is now in my amp's series loop and it sounds good. I will next look for a way to mod the amp and just install it permanently in parallel - that is my next step. I am really happy with the VHT amp - made in China so I only paid $339 - but it is hand wired on turrets and so easy to Mod. I already added a new tone stack, and I will make the reverb permanent soon. Most of the VHT mods out there are for the Special and Ultra 6 models, but those can be adapted to this model easily because the schematics look so similar - all you have to do is figure out the different component numbers by comparing diagrams. |
