Monster Effects Swamp Thang

polystyrene
Hi all,

Looking for some help troubleshooting my 2nd build. I'm pretty new to this so it might be something obvious but I've been over everything a few times now with no luck.

I've been building the Swamp Thang as per the layout on the site..

I tested the board outside of the enclosure before hooking up the switch etc and the effect seemed to work (albeit very noisy). I put this down to being out of the case so went ahead and wired everything up.

When the effect is bypassed there is a lot of noise added to the signal. When engaged the volume drops to around half, the guitar signal still comes through to the amp but any effect applied is very weak and again, noisy. Adjusting the pots does change the effect, but applies more to the noise generated than the signal.

I've attached a picture below in case there's anything to go by here. I've just checked my voltages across each transistor as recommended in the sticky. They are:

Q1
C - 9.6
B - 1.26
E - 0.68

Q2
C - 1.3
B - 0.68
E - 0

Q3
C - 0.9
B - 0.46
E - 0

Q4
C - 2.2
B - 1.67
E - 1.08

Thanks in advance.

Hi Poly

Looks like you've wired up your jacks wrong.  You have your sleeve and tip lugs mixed up.  The tip (signal) lug is the one sandwiched between the wafers.  The sleeve (ground) lug is the centre ring.

Try swapping them and see if that sorts it.

What a brainfart that was on my part. I've now swapped over the leads and everything is working as expected.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated :)
