Hi Orson,

The blog isn’t busy now like it was for a few reasons. Firstly we ran out of circuits to do by the high volume we churned out in the first few years. I always had a backlog of 10 or 20 effects I wanted to do layouts for, but because the majority of historic effects which are suitable for vero layouts have dried up, we just don’t have as many to go at. This is why you won’t see anything for a while and then a new pedal will appear, basically because one of us noticed a trace had been done one FSB or similar.

When the majority of the early layouts were done I had a lot more free time during the day but a new job and different commitments changed that which is why I started slowing down from maybe 2015 onwards. The other admin contributors were posting more regularly than me then, but we’d been doing it over a decade and people just move on sometimes and want to do other things.

Now I’m much more likely to want to build a guitar than an effect pedal because my hobby focus shifted slightly. But I will always be into guitars amps and effects and so will contribute here when I have something I think people will want me to share.

But the site won’t be going anywhere ever. Even if the forum loses traffic completely, I will always keep the blog and layouts up. If Blogspot / Google ever take it down, I’ll post everything in a new blog somewhere else. So don’t worry about that. The archive will always be available and added to occasionally when either I or one of the other contributors see something we think people will want to build, or when requests come up in the forum.

Cheers

|V|ark,

I am apparently less than observant. After registering, logging in and posting, it was some time before I noticed that this site has slowed down dramatically. I'm not going to ask your reasons, I'll only say I hope all is well with you. If not, I hope it is again soon.

I didn't notice that the posting of new layouts has slowed the last few years. Beginning in 2019 it took a dip, but seemed to resume in 2023. Finally, in 2024, it is down to four projects so far, but we're only three months into the year.

I hope this isn't impertinent or what have you, but should those of us who want to build these projects begin downloading the layout images and saving them? Will this site remain active and present on the internet, or is this just temporary? I'd help support this site in anyway I can, rather than lose such an *amazing* resource, such as you and other have created here.

Please let me know, and thank you for your time here in the last few days.

Orson

Got the SHOD up and running. Everything works. Changed the gain pot for A1M to increase the gain.

What I haven't been able to quite sort out is how to reduce the bass. It's bass heavy and the overdriven sound is really flubby sounding, like the bass is happening *before* the clipping happens.

Can someone suggest a way to alter the pedal so it's less bass heavy?

I'm noticing that there aren't many if any posts in this part of the forum from 2024. Is there a more active place to ask questions?
tag:guitar-fx-layouts.238.s1.nabble.com,2006:post-51020Re: SHOD question2024-03-21T17:04:08Z2024-03-21T17:04:08ZOrson
Got it, thank you so much!

So it's up and running. Are you, or anyone else here aware of any way to increase the gain or drive? I used red LEDs thinking it would increase the compression and breakup, but I'm not sure it did. I assume increasing breakup via the clipping diodes would be to go to something with a lower vF. Maybe 1N914s or 1N200x? If memory serves, if I use green LEDs, that would decrease the breakup further.

Also, it seems a bit bass heavy. Is that something that can be shifted upwards?

Yes that’s correct. Don’t forget pin 1 to ground or the volume pot won’t work correctly

Yes, all grounds need connecting up so do whichever way is best for your build. When I have a ground strip top and bottom of the layout like that I would usually have a link somewhere in the layout making the connection. But in that case there was nowhere to cleanly put the link without increasing the width to 22 columns which would make it difficult to fit in a 1590B box. So I just used two separate ground wires shown with the assumption that you would just daisy chain from one to the other.
So connect all grounds up to the same point. You could even use spare holes in the top or bottom ground rows and connect the off board grounds from jack sockets and DC socket to those holes. Or daisy chain between the lot of them, whatever works best for you

One last thing - there are two grounds on the right hand side of the vero board. I have the ground from the DC jack going to the bottom ground. Can I tag the upper ground to the other jack, or inside the enclosure? Does it matter, I mean, it's all ground.

Yes. It’s the same with most layouts that have a volume pot at the end of the circuit.

Hi |V|ark,

Thanks for the helpful reply.

I've been referring to the layout on the offboard page through this entire wiring job. I can't believe how much I've forgotten! So, to be clear, I just run the wire (blue top right hand in the diagram) from the switch to lug three on the volume pot then?

Hi Orson (and everyone else), welcome back to the site. Like you I've had a fairly long sabbatical and other commitments and hobbies took over for a long time. I'm still into all this but am just not as active as I used to be. It hasn't helped that we pretty much ran out of layouts to do too . But I've still got a garage crammed full of components and there are a few things I want to build so will have to motivate myself sometime soon. I got into building guitars more than effects and that's another time hungry can of worms I opened there!

Keep us updated how you get on with your builds

Hi Orson

It's wired exactly the same as the other effects, it's just the output goes from the Volume pot instead of a wire from the board.

If you look at the first layout on the Offboard page, the blue Output wire is instead the Volume 3 wire which goes to the pot. Volume 1 is connected to ground and then Volume 2 is the real output which goes to the top right hand lug of the stomp switch in the drawing

Good luck with your build

Hi,

You can call me Orson. I used to be a member here, but dropped off around 2014 or so, due to family responsibilities. I've resumed building pedals again, so here I are.

I can't recall any of the details for my original account, so I created a new one.

Hi,

I'm new here, but I've been building the vero layouts by |V| and others here for a long time. I laid off for a very long time (years) due to family stuff, and am now picking it back up.

I have assembled a SHOD (2nd layout). I'm stuck because the out put on the switch doesn't go to the vero board as is so often the case. The output apparently comes from volume 2 to the output jack. So is the output on the switch not used? Do I just leave that switch lug unwired and wire the vol 2 to the output jack?

Thanks!

Dear all,

a while a go I build the Tycobrahe Octavia, https://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com/2013/04/tycobrahe-octavia.html. But now i want to give it some extra options. I have 2 vintage GE diodes, Fv 0.3v, and 2 silicon diodes, Fv 0.7v and i want to be able to switch between these, to alter the sound of the octave. But I also want to keep the possiblity to lift 1 diode, so I can have a standard fuzz without an octave. Is this possible with a DPDT On-Off-On switch? How do I wire this.

Thanx for the tips.

With regards,

Dutcheffects

So, I tried adding the pregain pot, and it's...'okay'. It's not really smooth and the fuzz gets a bit flabby.

After some further research, I see that the Prescription Electronics also uses a 'gain' pot - but it runs the Gain pot between the Tone and Volume - so I'm not sure how I would add that. Below is the layout I'm using - I thought I could change the 68k resistor to 18K, and connect to a 50k 'Gain' pot (lugs 1&2), and connect lug 3 to Volume 3 - as is done in the Yardbox.

Any thoughts? Help?

I had a request to build a Tonebender Mark 3 with a 'pre-gain' control (basically an input level control that would emulate changes to the guitar's volume knob, so he could 'set and forget') - I'm using a modified version of the Mark 3 layout with an onboard voltage inverter.

I modified the Park Fuzz Three-knob layout from here: Original Park-Fuzz-3-knobbie-and-2-knobbie

My plan was to route the guitar signal input to lug 2 of the pot, wire lug 1 to ground and lug 3 to the circuit input. Using a 500k Rev Log pot (to simulate the guitar's volume control - Strat).
Would there be any issues with doing this? Thanks in advance.

I know this is based on the Keeley Plus from what I can tell anyway. The Keeley has a "Single Coil / Humbucker" switch. This one does not. Does anyone know if this is more effective with singles or humbuckers?

Hello! I want to build a Crybaby with some mods, without the input buffer but with an output buffer. I used the Rocket88 layouts as a base and for the output buffer I used the Axis Wah schematic.

Current doubts: Q3 drain needs direct connection to 9v? or is it ok as it is? Are the Wah3 and the trimpot/output ok?

I am a newbie and this is the first layout i made, can someone please confirm that everything is ok.

A photo of the underside might help evaluate things, particularly if a cut got omitted or misplaced, or if an unwanted bridge exists. It's a start. Working through a schematic with an audio probe can help too, but let's look at the underside first.

This is when i cut my teeth with pedal making!

it started out as a cool small hobby to get new tones and eventually spun out of control (in a good way).

everyone here was so supportive and open with sharing knowledge and troubleshooting tips and how-tos.

I did a little bit of the etch your own PCBs... enough to know that this wasn't a realistic option. did the OSHpark thing for a bit but then when i discovered JLC all bets were off. another thing that pushed me to PCBs is that the place that made and sold the large stripboard panels that i used to buy stopped making stripboard altogether. this kind of forced me to learn eagle as well.

A lot of the old timers here gave me a lot of inspiration. in no particular order, JohnK, Travis, Geiri, rocket88, kinski, Chris60601, IVIark, and so many others.

It forced me to learn inkscape and spend so many hours perfecting waterslides before moving to affinity designer and UV printing

how it started (i had to dig thru the show your pedal guts thread to find this pic)

and how it's going today:

I have noticed that the forum and blog have slowed considerably from the peak period but this place is still such an incredible resource!

Keep on keepin' on!

Like many, this place started me on my pedal-building journey and gave me my most time-consuming and enjoyable hobby, so I cannot thank everyone involved enough for that gift. I went from extremely basic electronics knowledge to learning to modify circuits to my liking, learning to use DIYLC to lay out tidy and functional veros, all the way to building microphones, designing my own enclosure graphics and even using KiCAD to design my own PCBs. This place is like a home for all DIY pedal building endeavours and a monument to community and the open-source spirit.

This forum is a very good source to find schematics, veroboards and protoboards layout beside the tabgoard collection. Without the layouts I find here I wouldn't build (maybe not so easily) some of my pedals.

I still like forums, where I can share information, give my contribution and getting some help.
