just use the ground lug on the jacks for your ground when doing your testing. i'm surprised you're meter doesn't have a continuity setting. if you're in the ohm setting you should see some reading if there's continuity, doesn't matter the number for that test as long as it's something, if there's no continuity they you'll get no reading. for testing the jacks, insert a cable to give the effect power, since you're using a stereo jack, then test either lug on the jack as long as it's not the ground lug.
