Power Amp/Pre-Amp Integration Question

spacefuzz74
Hey all.

So, I have a power amp (just the power amp head, no pre-amp stage) and I have the Sunn Model T pre-amp build started (this one here):

http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com/2016/09/sunn-model-t-1st-gen-preamp.html

to use with the power amp.  I made sure all the caps are at least 50V because I wanted to include a voltage doubler charge pump in the box with the Model T circuit.  I'm also using SMD J201's...which by the way are not as intimidating to assemble (w/ adapter board) as I initially feared.

Is there anything else I need to consider when putting this all together?

Will the 18v pre-amp be sufficient to run to the power amp?  Or should I consider a higher voltage pump?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

For the most part you can simply put the preamp infront of the power amp, output from the preamp goes to the input of the power amp. As for will 18V be enough to power the power amp I can't say without knowing what it is, plus iylu need to make sure there's enough amperage to power everything.

So, is there anything I need to do to the pre-amp stage (the Model T), so the audio signal is stepped up to a certain level suitable for further amplification by the main power amp (an older Traynor head)?

I figured the charge pump would take care of that, but I'm not 100% sure...

The preamp should be fine as is going into the power amp. Are you planning on using the charge pump to power both the preamp and power amp or just the preamp? Is the power amp the traynor you mentioned? If so I would contact them or look for then manual to find out about the amount of power it needs. 18v charge pump will be fine for the preamp on its own for sure, but I doubt it puts out enough amperage for the power amp and preamp, let alone the power amp by itself.

The power amp has it's own power source, so I'm just looking to power the pre-amp.  I was just going down a research hole reading about proper pre-amp output, line levels, etc....and I just started thinking too much.

I think I should just stop reading & start working!  Put this together and just see how everything works together!

Thanks man, for all the help!
