Power issue with GT-OD build

Hi All,

I've been trying to troubleshoot the lvlark's GT-OD http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com/2012/08/mxr-gt-od.html.

It works perfectly with a new 9v battery (I included a snap) but sounds terrible, gated, and overblown when I plug it in to a regular 9v dc source. I included a picture, though the wire mess might be difficult to see through...

Has anyone had this issue before or have any clue what might be going on? I'm totally perplexed. Thanks in advance!
