TO18 2N2222 VS other exotic transistors

GrooveChampion
Is it me or do most layout that call for exotic low Hfe transistors like the 2n1308 can be substituted for a TO18 2n2222 with the right Hfe with little difference in sound?

Well I've done that.  It worked.  But then I like using metal can 2N2222As in Muffs.  :-)  In fact my favourite Muff right now is based on a Skreddy Pink Flesh but with 2N2222As and no clippers on the third gain stage.  It's almost a muddy OD at low gain - and incredibly touch responsive.  One of the most fun pedals I've built.

I have some 2N1308s and have been thinking of using them to build a similar Muff.  It's a bit like a Supa Tone Bender except I leave the clipping diodes off the wrong tranny.  :-)  And I have used 2N1308s in things like the Red Rooster which calls for Ge.  They work but don't sound as fat.  Still a good sound though.

I forgot the 2N1308 are GE, I confused them with the 2N1711 that are in the EQD Dirt Transmitter. I am honestly wondering how I am still somewhat sane with all these 2N's around. Anyway, I was asking this question BECAUSE of the 2N1711.

For all NPN GE applications I ordered some Soviet MP38's.

Can confirm about the 2222s in Muffs, I have a Black Russian build with 2222s and D223As that rips. High-gain transistors are usually called for in Muffs but you'd be surprised what you can do with the low-gainers.
Through all the worry and pain we move on

Like MP38s in NPN Fuzz Faces and Rangemasters?

It’s not specific to one transistor type in any way. The Fuzz Face and Rangemaster don’t need high hfe transistors and they didn’t come with high hfe transistors originally

Well, I've seen differences I remember when I first started building pedals I tried a BC108C Sunface and I couldnt get it to work right. Last week I found those BC108C's and turns out they have like 600+ Hfe, no wonder it didnt work right.
