TS808 Build - No Output Signal

Paulryan
Hi all,

I’ve just put my first effect together, the TS808.

However, i’ve just been testing it and I seem to have no output signal at all.

I worked in an electronics factory for years but I’m pretty rusty at reading the components.. so though I can’t place exactly what I ’m doing wrong I have no doubt I’ve overlooked something rather silly - please help this numpty if you can :)

Paul

heyveno
can you shoot the back.

Do you test it in a box ? ( pictures too)

Hi, and  welcome!

One thing that caught my eye is that you seemed to have used a .1k63 cap. Which translates to 100nf.

The layout asks for a 1Uf cap there. The other 1U is hard to tell cause you used a tantalum cap. I'm horrible at recognizing resistor values, so that is hard.

If changing the cap does not do the trick, a picture of the bottom would be good. You also mention no output. Is that also in bypass? In that case can you post a pic of your wiring?

Hi Paul

Measure the voltage between each transistor pin, and each IC pin and ground.  That will give us a good idea where there is a problem

Hi all,

Sorry been super busy at work or I'd have replied to this sooner. Here's a WeTransfer link to higher resolution images (including one of the back).

It's not clear from the image still, but I'm pretty sure its not shorting out somewhere (though a multimeter is next on my list of things to buy).

Thanks again, and fingers crossed you can spot something I've clearly missed here!

Hey Marbles, I’m looking over the components on the board, and as best as I can tell the .1k63 cap, is in the right place. I’ve been following the TS808 ‘compact’ diagram of Marks, but put the diodes on the board (in so, choosing not to have the clipping switch option).

All components were from one of Marks kits, specifically for this build, so I really don’t know what I’ve done wrong here.

Perhaps orientation of a component, or maybe I’ve miswired something. Though I can’t see what!

If I turn the volume up the background noise does increase a little. Whether I switch the effect on or not, I still don’t get an actual output from the guitar though. So, I’m obviously doing something very wrong!

Excuse the Frankenstein wiring here. I’ve removed the footswitch for now and wired everything so it’s ‘on’, to eliminate possible faulty switch wiring as the culprit. Annoyingly I still have the same result... no output. At least I’m consistent!

Yeah, I'm sorry, I was sleeping I guess. I was confusing it with the one next to it, ugh.

All components look good indeed. I'm not familiar with these jacks unfortunately, so can't help you there.

I'm more in the simple camp of debugging lol. I don't think I can be of any help, but there are only 2 things I can come up with:

Could you post a picture of the bottom of the board?
And the mistake I have made too many times with the same result: Are you sure you didn't swap input and output when plugging in your guitar. Yes, I feel bad for even suggesting it, but we've all been here.

Edit: just found your wetransfer files, apologies

The picture of the bottom is a bit blurry. Did you knife all the tracks good?

These spots look suspect, but it's really hard to tell. It could also be the green ink:

Re: TS808 Build - No Output Signal

Okay, so the good news is I've got it working! The bad news is, I made a very rookie mistake in the first place!

I finally got myself a multimeter to test what was going on. Nothing was shorting out, so I checked all components again and they all appeared to be in the right place. I wondered if I'd ever figure it out..

I'd used PCB mount sockets, and it turns out after a lot of head scratching, that I'd wired the input socket to the other two legs. So by plugging my guitar in, everything was being disconnected. Doh!

Oh well, got there in the end. Now I can concentrate on putting a snazzy enclosure together.

Thanks for your help guys!
