I'm sorry to hear you are having problems with your build.
Mine works perfectly with no distortion.
It can go from subtle to really agressive compression.
The vero layout follows the schematic except the DC filtering which was a bit excessive in the original..
There is just one 100uF cap V+ to ground insted of big 220uF caps close to the V+ pin of every IC.
It would have taken alot of space, and a single 100uF should be sufficient.
I also put the polarity protection diode in series insted of parallel.
But other then these changes, the circuit itself is 1:1 with the schematic.
The IC symbols you see in the schematic shows one op amp.
But since these are dual op amps IC's, two schematic symbols is actually one IC.
If you have a look in the schematic, IC1A and IC1B is the same IC. Same for IC2A/IC2B ect
