Testing and matching smt jfets?

I was just sitting here thinking about building a phaser pedal, but then realized...

I stopped using through hold jfets a long time ago and have been using smt models for about 1.5 years with adapter boards.  How am I gonna be able to test and match jfets without told earring them onto an adapter board first?

Is the part to part variance on smt deceives small enough now that we don't need to test them to find the best matches anymore?

Since you are already using them I assume you already add "legs" to them - so you should be able to use any JFET tester that you find that works for you.

As for quality control - I have heard from pro pedal makers (at NAMM) that SMD is much better for quality control than through hole. Here is a good article that says SMDs are definitely better in terms of tolerance:

This guy built a unit to test four JFETS at once from an arduino kit.

i mount the jfets onto the adapter board and then attach the adapter to header pins.  I used to solder legs onto them but i could never get it to look pretty, and they always felt flimsy when i socketted them onto the vero board.

regardless, that link has a good idea... drill a hole in the center and mount the jfet upside down and then use soft plastic to keep the contact in place.
