Thought I would say Hello

Mr Plums
Hello

Over the past few months I have found myself on here more and more and I have used the plentiful resources on this site to make a few pedals.

So first of all a big THANK YOU to those who give their time to do the layouts.

Fortunately I have had little problems in getting the pedals to fire upstright off, well one but that was my own stupind fault for not checking the 9v feed as I had a bridge onto the ground on the Maxon OD and blew 2 op amps.

I have a method of testing the parts, soldering the parts one at a time then checking for bridge’s. I have also learnt to never place a part and then place the next part using the other part as a reference, this can lead to parts in the wrong place and one placed wrong leads to another placed wrong.

This all started when a jam buddy of mine paid £179 for a SHO. I liked it and wanted one however, when the battery died and he opened it up I had a look and saw a tiny circuit and had a flashback to buying some components for a LED project my daughter was doing at school and it costing no more than £10 to buy parts. I thought where the bloody hell is £179 in the SHO Box. So I searched SHO and  “tag board effects” was discovered. I built it for a cost of £16 and in the process upset my Jam buddy and now our Jam Sessions have turned into Pedal build nights. Needless to say my Jam buddy sold is SHO and built his own.

I have learnt so much, a bit about electronics but more about the absolute horse poo that large scale pedal manufacturer’s sprout. Who it would seem just rip each other and regurgitate each other's designs and then try to pass them off as something new and magical.

When I now read marketing blurb for a pedal I may want to build, I can't see what they have written, now I see something like this.

“ Well this baby has been on the breadboard well before Sir Isaac Newton invented the electron, this all started when I was visited by the ArchAngel Gabriel in a dream who sang to me. I was lucky enough to have my phone next to the bed and hit record and caught the beautiful tones. Then I studied the tones for 110 years. I listened to the recording from every possible angle which included hanging upside down with a 12 inch Celestion greenback plugged into my brain, from a 200ft bridge over a busy motorway for 2 days so my ears could analyse every possible wave form. When I had the sound completely analyzed I began building the pedal.

I realized to recreate this sound I needed an op amp built by the gods themselves, I took a trip to the arctic circle and caught 20 of the endangered tonal jellyfish (at great risk to myself, as one sting from these can render you infertile). From there I went to Egypt and waited for the 3rd full moon of the week, then i broke into the Great Pyramid, made my way to top floor ( the lifts were out of order so i had to take the stairs), stripped naked and gave myself 120 lashes from the cat o nine tails used on Jesus as he took his finally walk. This lashing of myself was done to purify me of any tonal unhollyness. Then I hung just one jelly fish above my workstation and chanted to summon the egyptian goddess of tone “Tut am Tone al” When she appeared I sacrificed the jellyfish. Then as the op amps were being made one drip of the jellyfish’s blood was placed in each one to give it tonal nirvana. I only managed to make 100 so this pedal will be very limited.

I have decided to cover the circuit board in black goop as its top secret and not another tweaked tube screamer. Needless to say I am well on the way with the patent process which will not fail as no other pedal is built by the gods.

Buy yours now £500”.

Welcome to the forum Mr Plums! I’m glad you’ve been enjoying your DIY stompboxes. The SHO is a great one indeed. What’s next on your list?

Hi

Thanks for the welcome.

Over the weekend I put together the seamon funk machine V2 with blender.

I have enough boost and overdrives and compressors, now thinking more modulation is needed.

Maybe a nice auto wash this week, any thoughts on what's good and worth a boxing up?

Depends on what you’re after. My favorite is the Meatball but I would recommend building that with a PCB.

The Mutron stuff is classic and the EHX stuff works well too

I get what you mean about dirt pedals but if I go like this (11 overdrives, 10 boosts, 10 Fuzz, 6 compressors, 3 Delays and parts ordered for a forth) I will be able to stack them in a arm chair configuration.

I just built the space spiral that took me 3 days on and off and well worth the effort although I did get hot under collar getting it in 125 there is electrical tape everywhere.

once again thank you for the effort these place is amazing.

Pavlos
just be careful of those footswitches

On a bit of GoT theme, some possibly cool pedal names?

The Seven Kingdoms........modulation or dirt pedal witha 7 way switch to choose the different voices?

Wildling........fuzz / distortion

Night King........distortion / heavy fuzz

Valar Morghulis......distortion / heavy fuzz

Thenn..........brutal distortion

Unsullied........clean boost

Lord Of Light..........not sure about this one but could do an alternative acid house smiley faced inspired version?
