What can I build with 2N338 transistors?

A year or so I bought these four transistors on Ebay. They were purported to be germanium.

The PEAK said they are silicon; with very low hFE of 76 to 110.

They look pretty cool with that GE logo on the top though.

What could I build with these?

GE logo looks like General Electric?

You could have a look at this for some extra info and search for something with similar spec to be able to substitue?

No specific reccomendations I'm afraid but the HFE measurements suggest they should be good in place of anything that would use 2N2222A, 2N3904 and probably the lower gain ranges of BC108, BC182, BC183, BC547, BC548, BC549

IIRC some fuzz (Fuzz Face derivatives for example) regularly use at least one of the transistors with a lowish HFE like this paired with something with a bit more grunt?

Maybe the silicon mkII tonebender on the main page. The one from 2013 listed under NPN SI tonebender MkII (as there's a few different ones.) I've made a couple with 2369's in the low hundreds and they sound really good.

Confirmed the Si tone bender Mk 2, very good build.  Take the bias off board as a pot. It's all in the thread.  

Also the plutonium fuzz uses a low gain in it too, there's a layout in the requests section.  It's one of my favorites.

Definitely in the right hfe range for a fuzz face, you could see how you like them there. Maybe you could build two, or the TB is a good suggestion

Sometimes the DCA55 says transistors are Si when they are actually Ge. They could be Si though, I do have TO5 Si transistors

I looked up the datasheet on these. They are Silicon. Maybe they were listed as germaniu because they say GE on them.
