Re: boss ce-2 ticking

well now i have a new problem. the tick is gone. i have a really bad pop when switching on. it was there before the fix. i tried adding another pulldown before the 47n didnt help. i also have issues with the stereo daughter board. the stereo does work but everything is crackling and distorted . i guess i am getting greedy. do you think adding the voltage divider had something to do with it?i triple checked everything and modded my board exactly like the one with mods and the led. idk why its crackling with the stereo board. the voltages on the daughterboard 4558 are the same as the main board. ithanks again Frank

Hey, alright - the tick is gone!  Good to hear.

For the popping you could try to put a pulldown resistor at the output to see if it goes away.  Also, try replacing the 1 uF at the output - maybe it's bad.  Finally you could put a buffer at the end to see if it helps.  You can do Google search for popping in effects pedals and come up with lots of good info.

As for the stereo daughterboard, I don't think it was verified.  You may have to find the CE-3 pedal schematic and see if the daughterboard is consistent with the stereo output section of the CE-3.  Anyhow, good luck!

Wow, makes perfect sense. Thanks Frank and Strasser!

I was actually studying the difference between the Porkbarrel and this layout while I was traveling today, it didn't click though. Seems so simple now that you have explained it. 😕

I've spent way to many hours chasing the VB filtering and shielding on my current build as it appeared to have resolved the thumping on my last build. Have no idea why that one worked based on what I have read here.

I know who has the previous one, sounds like I need to have him send it back to me for a tune up.

Can't wait to get home and give this a go. I'll post my results too next Sunday 08/02.

Hope I can return the favor some day.

Yes, I've had a string of bad luck lately.

No kidding, I had a run of 10 or more pedals that fired right up.

Then I struggled with noise with the Stage Fight (solved), Dirtbaby (somewhat solved) and the Harbinger (still struggling, going to build another and compare).

Yeah, I love building pedals, especially for buddies of mine. Started in the early 90s! Before we had all these great resources and reasonable priced parts.

Wish I had more time for pedals, somewhat limited in summer.

Did I read you had a couple Harbingers working well?

Since the tick fix (hey, that rhymes!) is verified, perhaps IvIark should update the ce-2 layout with the mod.  Also, am I to understand that the stereo daughterboard works?  If so, great!

Yes I would agree with that and yes the stereo is working perfectly. I drilled my cuts and on third glance I saw a microscopic bridge ha ha. Now I just have to add a 4pdt switch and try a couple of pop removal mods

I would need to edit the layout with some better graphics..., but I agree it should be more widely known.

Hello Frank

Maybe it's not clear to me but, does the 10K resistor on the bottom right, replace the former removed link, or does it only get soldered on the section where you greyed it out?

Thanks!

Hi Razvan,

The link shown in white is completely removed.  The top lead of the lower right 10k resistor is placed to the left of the emitter of Q4.   Hopefully that is clear.  Good luck with your build - let us know how it turns out!

Hello Frank

I realized yesterday my mistake and I corrected it, and just now read your reply.

Works perfectly, thank you so much for the fix, your reply makes it much clearer now for others.

In fact, I just received yesterday an original CE-3 for that matter, and the CE-2 clone destroys it , in the sense that the tone remains the same with the CE-2 clone , the CE-3 darkens the sound and is much duller, and I sense a slight volume drop on the low end somehow on the CE-3...MEH...

My customer will be pleased.

I actually installed sockets to actually check with your tick fix and stock. Sure enough, without your fix, it thumped a bit(not drastic), but audible. After your fix, it was PERFECT!

I will post here some photos, this is before I did your fix correctly(notice that I had the 10K resistor replacing the whole link haha, and that caused the LFO to ''stop'', that is why I had a ''fixed'' chorus sound, which to be honest in a way I like that as well, gives a kind of a voicing to your guitar, and it sounds different if you set the depth pot different, which could be a ''feature'' too haha)

This would be the 119th pedal I have built from here, you can check out my other stuff at HGE Contraptions, I do pretty clean builds IMO. I like this CE-2 much more with the trim set at 5.6 to 5.9 V, 4.6 or 4.8 to me seems to make the pedal too subtle.

So , pics from BEFORE I did the fix incorrectly haha:

Nice build Razvan!  Very clean wiring.  I have yet to build this effect but I think I have the parts so maybe this summer I'll finally give it go.

"This would be the 119th pedal I have built from here..."

Hmmm...I haven't checked all my bags of unboxed circuits but I think I'm approaching that number of builds!

(I should note that most of my veros that don't work out get the "harvest" treatment, where I remove/desolder as many components as possible (except resistors) to re-purpose in a new build. )

Re: boss ce-2 ticking

Thanks for the video links - great comparison between the CE-2 vero circuit and the Boss CE-3!  Definitely no ticking that I can hear, and the CE-2 sounds very lush and musical.

I currently have an MXR Micro Chorus on my pedal board.  It's OK but only has a single control.  I also have a Visual Sound Liquid Chorus, which I love but it's a bit big.  So a CE-2 build in a 125B enclosure may be a good compromise.
