Rocket, thanks for following up. By awful I mean super compressed at note attack and then synth-y and wavering (?) as the note carried out to decay. I didn't try to tune Q4 by ear before bypassing it cause I dig it so much with 3 trannies. I did try a number of 5457s and 201s combinations including the one you suggested but it didn't make much difference. I also dumped the bass boost and gain rotaries in favor of a pair of SPDT switches since there's only one or two settings I really use. When I have time I may reinstall Q4 and tinker some more. If I do, I'll post the results.
