i think something you're doing is wrong, cause that seems really odd to me. i personally don't use the tester, as i bought a DCA55, which not only measures the leakage, but gives you the hfe with the leakage accounted for. the only advice i can give you on the testing procedure is read this, if you haven't already. the tester on the site is build around being able to use this method, as describe by R.G. Keen.
