I just.. use the colors used in the layouts haha.
Blue for volume and output, yellow for gain etc.

I like to use one color, makes it look more tidy(to me) but because writing on in is less tidy to me too, I get way confused when testing or debugging.

Plus, for each and every friend I built a pedal, I wrote a message on the inside, and no one has ever noticed it. So I stick to the colors in the layout.
