I have no idea how to add a gate.. you could probably starve/misbias one of the transistors to achive gated fuzz, but it would probably make it sound sputtery and loose sustain.. I would put the circuit on a breadboard and experiment, start with R7.

Nice idea about the pre-trimmer. I will try that :)
