Re: Amp discovery!

Kinski
Yeah, i agree, it does not seem VERY loud. Still plenty for me as an easy lazy practice amp. More voltage = more watts, so maybe try increasing your power supply to 24v. And/Or use a speaker with higher sensitivity. Also, maybe the SBEQ or some other preamp can boost your input signal more without clipping the 3118 board?

Got two boards in today. and wired one up. Definitely works. Very flat EQ running direct. So some form of EQ is needed. I tested it with the Sea Blue EQ. Really sweetened up the sound. That thing does wonders for any set up I think. But I don't think I am getting any where near the volume level out of this thing as I should. Nothing like I'd expect for 30 watts. More like 5 watts. I don't see any adjustments on the board. And tried it with 9, 12 & 18 volts. From the little bit i was able to play with it. I did like the 18 volt best. More dynamic sound. But a very small playing sample. Until i knocked it off the bench and now it's just squealing at me.

Time of death. 17 minutes.

Next one gets a box.

How much volume are you guys getting? 30 watts that sucker should be loud.

Give that EQ circuit a try with this thing. Might be a winner.

One thing I did notice. Is that this digital circuit is very revealing. If you put something into that doesn't sound good, it'll sound like ass coming back out.

Here's my new practice amp :

Joyo american sound --> tpa3118 powered at 18v --> superchamp cab with 10" and 8ohms speaker

Sound really better at 18v than 9v to my hears, and works perfect with a 250ma power supply. Surprised me how loud this thing could get. Maybe I'll implement a master volume to get a little less noise.

Happy to get that footswich box useful!

I may add that for some reason 18V do not sound louder than 9v!

Probably just a bit more clean headroom, yeah?

Re: Amp discovery!

régis@fofo
yeah, something like much more "space" in the sound. At 9v, Hard pick attack made my hears bleed.

the joyo match really well with it, and that's a preamp you can boost (for noise lovers anyway)! Loved it with a SHO!
When I'll have a chance I'll try it louder with my big cab...

Thank you very much for sharing your discovery kinski! made me happy!

Re: Amp discovery!

Finally got my build finished!

And it sounds damn good.

I paired the amp with a HAO Sole Pressure (reduced input cap, removed tone switch, and added a toggle to use Si, Mosfet, or No clipping diodes) and the Simple CabSim.

It all runs on an internal 12v 6800mAh Li-Ion battery. Or any external supply. And a 4" 50-watt speaker.
With the gain up, it can get crazy loud.

Dude that is badass! Cool knobs, they look like the ones on the Echoplex

Got a good source for small speakers?

Re: Amp discovery!

Hey thanks guys!
The knobs were salvaged from some busted electronics I found on the street.
For small higher watt speakers, I like these Boss Audio full range ones on Amazon. They come in a few different sizes.

This is my hotel amp when on tour or at home when feeling lazy.

I have everything to build Zach's Sunn Model T preamp, and was looking at small power amps to run it into, so I just ordered up one of these bad boys.   Looking forward to it.   I'll report back once I get it together.

If you're going to do that it might be a good addition to convert the phase inverter tube to FET. Might make it seem more like the real deal.

Yes that's an interesting Idea.   I will look into that

I have an old laptop power supply, and a couple 12V regulators coming from Tayda so I may run it all at 12V.  Kind of excited to mess around with this whole setup!

I just got a 19.5v supply I'm gonna try! Think it can go up to 24v. Look up the data sheet for the tpa3118 chip. They have a graph that shows voltage to watts output.

Re: Amp discovery!

Also, a lot of those laptop supplies have reversed + and - from our usual pedal supplies. I found out the hard ways while back and fried some stuff. Beware!

Re: Amp discovery!

Kinski
19.5v supply works great! Its not any louder, but its certainly cleaner. Compared to 12v, I can crank the preamp a lot more before the power amp starts to clip.

Internal battery supplies 12v to entire amp.

When using an external supply, I have 12v regulators on preamp and cabsim. Power amp sees full voltage, which will be 19.5v from now on.

Bringing back an older post here..

Just ordered a couple of these boards, thanks for the link and info! Anyone done any more experimenting with these things?

Re: Amp discovery!

Mines still sitting in the toolbox of pedals to come,   I just graduated from mechanical engineering school and started working so I got a back log of stuff to work on.  I've built and boxed 9 pedals in 2 weeks, so I'm happy about that, but I'd like to get this little amp going too.  I think I might try a cab Sim in addition to the model T pre, seems like it's worth a shot.  Plus I've never made a cab Sim. I'm kind of oldschool and just run everything through the 4x12 ..

Congrats on your graduation and new job :)

Let me know what you end up doing man. I'm planning on putting this in a box with a few different JFET preamps that can be selected by a rotary switch.
