Best High Gain Build?

steveyraff
I was all set to start a Wampler Triple Wreck build, but then I seen the Dr.Boogie v2.

Anyone got any input into their thoughts on these two builds, or possibly an even better one?

I'm just looking for a nice, modern sounding, high gain overdrive.

Thank you.

I`ve built 4 dr boogies and it`s freakin awesome BUT......biasing those jfets is a PITA. Not built a triple wreck yet but it sounds great. I would also throw the barber dirty bomb into the mix, another great high gain pedal.
If it wasn't for this website I would definitely have a life.

Out of curiosity - did all 4 turn out identical in sound? I'm wondering how stable some of these are in terms of results matching the original.

I've built both the Dr. Boogie and the triple wreck. I don't care for the boogie much, but the TW is a great pedal.

Well I've built a Dr Boogie and didn't like it that much, but I might be to blame, on this one, it was one of my firsts... I think it sounds way too treble and thin.

I'm starting a Toneczar Openhaus (layout by Harald Sabro), we'll see...

Big problem on most higain i´ve seen, is that becomes thin and fizzy at live situations. Most of time when playing with the band, was to set a medium gain pedal just to crunch a slightly fattened tube amp. It gives more definition, and make the amp roar.

I finished today the plexi 800... souds good alone... but i haven´t tested alive yet.

The Triple Wreck is better than the Boogie in my opinion. It is much tighter and versatile. The Krank 'Distortus Maximus' might interest you too, good for mods but I'd add a pre-boost as it just doesn't reach that saturated high gain.

I agree that the triple wreck is better than the boogie, but IMO the Pinnacle is even better than the TW, I'd go for that one

OK, I can report that the Toneczar Openhaus is an amazing high gain pedal. With my Warmoth Baritone Telecaster (Duncan Distortion bridge pickup), the sound is really impressive!

I'm hesitating on what to build next: Okko Dominator or Triple Wreck...

 Hi.
I built them both and they are each unique. Both are high gain but I think the wampler has more tonal
quality (variation might be closer). But like I said both are very good effects. The boogie is a bit thinner mid range but still, with the tweekability of  treble-mid-bass-presence controls on both, you can drive yourself nuts, i.e. have fun, turning knobs and switching out pedals. I use the wreck on 'Heavy' by Collective Soul. The tone is perfect without blowing the walls down.
If I had only one it would be the 3 wreck. They are, generally speaking, in the same family of effects, but each very cool.
I put each one in a 125B from futurelec with the in/out and 9v jacks at the front. I can't figure why people put the jacks on the sides. It takes up too much room. The 125B is deep enough to 'float' the board over the pot bodies with no problems. Just use pot condoms or paper to keep the board from touching the pot lugs/bodies.
have fun.

i had some fun with the Plexi800 playing alive. IT´S HUGE, it´s thick, and wild. It´s easy to dial a fucking good tone from it. I recommend that... It has gain to rip off the paint from walls. And it CUTS WELL TROUGH THE MIX, what is a prerequisite for me.

So far, to me:

Toneczar Openhaus > Wampler Triple Wreck > Dr Boogie (way behind)

Has anyone compared those with an Okko Dominator?
