Best pedal to box with a Klon?

toddvirgil
Ok, so I'm getting ready to build a Klon and wondered if anyone had any good ideas for a 2-in-1 pedal with it. I bought a 1590bb so I should have ample room. Good boost? Or overdrive? Would love to hear your thoughts!

I built a Klon using a Madbean Sunking etched board and it sounds good before most of the other pedals i've built, with the exception of the OCD (Madbean Egodriver), which seemed to go a bit fizzy.

I built a Tubescreamer (TS808 / TS9 switchable) the other day and it sounds ok on it's own, but really good with the Klon before it.... it's like a secret sauce!

A boost is always a useful option, or you could put a Rat after te Klon? Rats sound great on their own as well as when pushed with extra gain/volume in front of them!

Why not go with something a little more unusual like a tremolo or something?
Thanks

The Klon has an insane amount of output, so boxin' it with a booster is a nonsense IMO.

I think that god options could be:

- With an overdrive like the tubescremer, timmy or zendrive, using the Klon as clean booster, or slightly overdriven.

- With a tremolo. A percusive one like the the Hummingbird would be nice and fit the Klon's sound.

- With a delay or phaser. It would be a nice and complete pedal to get many tones. Unfortunately, delays and pahsers use big boards, and the Klon one is not by all means small (you can always get a Mandbean pcb, pretty compact).

Hey Javi, I don't have any experience with the Klon but as you mention the huge amount of volume on tap, could it make sense to have a second footswitchable volume control and use it that as a super simple boost?

Yeah, it could be an option. That's the way many people uses the Klon, as not only clean boosts, but besides enriches the sound without changing the original tone.

But if done like you say, should be very careful. One day I tried the Klon with a SHO and I thought I had blown the 12' speaker :P

Bah, can't be that loud if it didn't really blow the one speaker :o)

Javi - those are great... I happen to have a timmy, a hummingbird and a madbean zero point micro delay, and a madbean runt (rat) all in the works (parts ordered). Guess I'll just have to wire them up and see which one I like best! I was thinking it'd be nice for a really small simple pedal board.

Do you think the Klon would work best first in the chain if I used an overdrive as the second?

Also question for everyone - I've never built a dual enclosure- do i just connect the output from pedal 1 to the input of pedal 2? And do I need two separate DC jacks or can I power both with one? I suppose it depends on the power consumption of the board... any thoughts?

This post was updated on .
The path would go:
Input jack -> switch 1 input (wire effect number 1 with true bypass)
then
switch 1 output -> switch 2 input (wire effect number 2 with true bypass)
and finally
switch 2 output -> output jack

Power wise, run the 9v into a low value resistor (ie 100/220R) and then put a high value electrolytic to ground. Do this for each board.

Here's a quick sketched schem/layout hybrid thing I made...

That's how I would do it anyway, if anyone has a better way of doing it (or explaining/illustrating it...!) I'd love to hear, I have a predrilled triple enclosure waiting on my desk, will probaby go for a OD->Fuzz->Delay combo...!

Hope this is clear enough and of any help!

Marshall Blues Breaker. In my opinion, it's better than the klon anyway.

Ok, its done! Took me forevor to end up wth all the parts for the Klon. I also realized a 1590BB is not as big as I thought, haha. So I squeezed a lovepedal eternity burst in there for my second gain stage. This thing sounds sweet!!

I had a it of trouble with my decal bleeding, but oh well. Here's a pic!
