Catalinbread Formula 5F6

anders
Unverified layout of FCatalinbread Formula 5F6. It calls for a 4PDT switch but a cool mod would be to split it up into two DPDT switches for a gain switch and a tone switch.
Schematic provided by Bugg (as usual).

Anybody build this one yet or have any experience with building it?

If not, I'll lead the way haha

If this is anything like the Model-T preamp (which is just a modified 5F6A) the gain sounded better as a C1M to my ears ;)   definitely putting this one on the list!

Just wired this bad boy up!

Hoping this works when I get home, first try! I separated the 4pdt to 2x DPDT and used the original transistors.

I paired it with a Omnicab Deluxe and have been trying to find a great preamp to go with it, but I've built about 3 or 4 different kinds and they're all lacking cleans/natural amp-like tones. Hoping this one'll be the last straw otherwise I'm going full digital haha

I haven't researched if a Model-T can be had with some component changes, but on the freestompboxes forum it looks like the PCB is identical to the SFTII? (Sorry, I forget which Catalinbread), but with component value changes.

For what it's worth, I do see a few Model-T layouts that come out of Bassman layouts haha

Just throwing this out there, but this isn’t the Fender Bassman preamp concerted from tubes to FETs, so turning it into a Sunn Model T isn’t going to be easy, if really possible. The SFT is supposed to emulate the an AMPEG SFT.  If you’re looking to make the preamp I posted on the main page the Sunn Model T preamp concerted to FETs, as well as the Bassman 5F6 preamp. Both preamps can be used as OD/Distortion or preamp pedals the same way as the Catalinebread pedals. Also, the preamp I designed will be more true to the actual tone and character of the amps they’re designed after.

I saw yours too, but there wasn't a video I could find or feedback about the sound. Can it get a pretty good clean sound to take pedals in the front end with?

The layout above worked, but I think the treble pot is wired backwards. Full clockwise and the sound cuts out completely. Counterclockwise and the volume increases with little treble increase.

Not sure if that's how the original works, but it does sound great with my direct rig. Going to gig with it this weekend!

They take pedals well. I can’t attest to them as pedals, but I know Ciaran helped design the Sunn Model T and it became his main OD. As an amps the Sunn Model T preamp will take pedals well, like the real amp, but it’s not really for cleans since it’s really never clean. The Bassman preamp I haven’t built so I have no idea, but should be pretty close to the amp.

Quick comparison from this layout vs PedalPCB's schematic:

-Bass 1 to Mid 3 should be Bass 2/3 to Mid 3
--On the schematic the top of the pots are marked "3", middle "2", and bottom "1", but the Bass pot is labeled backwards, so I get how that'd throw someone off!

-That means: Treble 1 & Bass 2/3 should be Treble 1 to Bass 1

Haven't looked at everything else, but my issue was with the tone stack, so hoping this is all there is to it!

I'll try to re-wire tonight and post back!

That did it!

The tone stack now works like a normal tone stack would and works like how one of the youtube videos depicts it!

Great amp sim that sounds even better going into my Omnicabsim clone!

Doesn't get 100% clean, but clean enough!

I was looking this over and wanting to build it. How would you wire the led?
