What can I build with MP38's?

Blackboarcult
The titile says it all.
I recently got a batch of NPN MP38's to build a Hornby treble/bass booster for a friend, and I'm left with 20+ of those.
I measured the hfe and it's all around 30-60.

So... recommendations are welcome!!
Worth noting that I'm not really fond of fuzzes ... I'm more into 70's-80's hard rock and HM.
Thanks in advance!

A lot of things. You could build a Germanium Giant, a NPN rangemaster, anything that calls for NPN germanium you can drop them in and try.

Hadn't thought about the Rangemaster... could be useful for those Rory or Iommi tones  thanks mate!

I just spotted the AA thunder tone on the main page, this one seems nice too, although yet unverified. I might try to build it with trimmers to get the correct gain with the MP38s.

Anyway... keep'em coming!

I used them for my EQD Tone Reaper and Hoof. You say you're not fond of fuzzes, but the Hoof is a good drive when turned down..   I also used one as the buffer on my Psi-Fuzz.  Look for distortion projects that use them in place of clipping diodes too.

Just checked some demos on Youtube, TA Fuzz Machine is not my cup of tea, but thank you for the recommendation anyway

And I really liked the Hoof, even fully driven, seems to be great for those 70's retro tones! I'll add that one to my ever-growing build list...

Thanks for the headsup, guys!!!

Not your cup of tea?

It literally does everything from mellow drive up through annihilation fuzz.. if you don't enjoy something in there.. what kind of stuff are you playing ?

Not much of a player, really, hehe. I enjoy playing classic 70's hard rock (Hawkwind, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Boston, Uriah Heep, BÖC, etc) and 80's Heavy Metal (Saxon, Mercyful Fate, Judas Priest, Candlemass, etc). But for band purposes, first-wave black metal (think Bathory, Celtic Frost, Venom, Bulldozer...)
Not very fond of the whole stoner-doom genre, with some exceptions though (Cathedral has THE ultimate guitar tone for this style, god if someone could find out how Gaz got that huge sound I'd be damn grateful!!!!)

So my ideal rig is usually some overdrive-or-distortion-into-Marshally-amp kind of stuff

Maybe it's just in my head, but I've always found that a lot of fuzzes somehow "substract" power and punch to chords. Yes, you can get some massive, crushing sounds out of it, but I always loved the classic rock kerranngg better
