if you haven't read anything by him yet maybe start with 'the man who mistook his wife for a hat' and the rest should follow.
and if you haven't already, read ken kesey's superb 'one flew over the cuckoos nest' in order to put his compassion and understanding in context with how people with emotional and psychological issues were often 'managed (abused)' when he entered the profession.
the inhumane elements in society are constantly trying to cast aside people with emotional and psychological problems (full time, part time and occasional) as inferior, not worthy of love or respect, and a financial burden it wishes to wash its hands of.
oliver sacks was on the other side. tirelessly seeking to promote compassion, understanding and support as the only humane and dignified way to address these issues. he made it his life’s work, which he shared with all who cared to take an interest, through his books and writings.
he was a great man in every sense of the word and humane society is instantly poorer for his passing.
Fantastic band! The groove just dripping off them! They do a lot of "Silent Disco" type shows. The audience seated in and around the band (sometimes more than 20 performers) and wear headphones of the mix. Cool idea.
Check out this vid of Lalah Hathaway singing with them. Apart from being an absolutely scandalous groovy track...check out what happens at 6.11. Unreal! And the bands reaction is priceless
