nice looking builds Trom

I think JohnK should do an industrial inspired build, perhaps battered with angle grinder marks and looking like it's been run over.......just to show he can

Love seeing all the excellent builds on this forum. One day I hope to get close to the high standard set by everyone here.

Here's my latest build, a Hotcake on vero for a friend.

The image is a photo I took a couple of weeks ago looking out to Fifeshire Rock and Tasman Bay here in Nelson, New Zealand.

I wouldn't worry about the standard of your builds Ian, looks pretty good to me and a cool pic on the front to boot  is that a light plate underneath?

I hear you. Sometimes I change caps or add switches on the fly to suit my rig, but most of the time I just read comments on this and other sites to get a sense for parts value changes and other modifications.

Do you breadboard your circuits first John?

My fuzz quest is continuing. There Fix'd Fuzz and Musket from Blackout Effector and a Fuzz head from Keeley with a bit of option. The last one is a double booster made with a HotCake and a MicroAmp.

One of my first builds was my own take on a Fuzzrite. The people who heard that pedal and tested it were blown away, so I built a few more as people wanted to buy it. Then, my gf had the idea of starting a little brand, so that's what we did, haha. She did the graphics and some other non-electrical stuff. The fuzz got revamped, new graphics, a name, etc. The internal trimpot goes from full-on fuzzrite goodness to a sputtery fuzz.

I can guarantee you that it sounds dope!  Still, I know I need to work on my wiring to make it a lot cleaner.

Re: Show your pedal guts!

Thanks! And waterslide decal indeed!

I really want to put some time and effort into research in methods for finishing enclosures. Etching can produce some pretty cool results, but then again, it seems like it's gonna take up a lot of time. I still have a lot of questions about what the possibilities are for enclosure finishes. Like, what does Earthquaker Devices do? Unfortunately, I don't have that much time... Maybe I should just ask my girlfriend, she's a part-time photographer/illustrator/diy-er/...
Any tips/tricks/links are welcome too ;-)

Check out the Earthquaker Mini Movie that Neil McNasty linked here in open chat.

It shows their very expensive looking industrial printer :P  I have owned a few earlier Earthquaker pedals which they used to screenprint by hand (Hummingbird, Sound Shank, and Hoof). I've done a fair amount of screenprinting myself and to be brutally honest, the quality of their screenprinting in those days was not very good. Now they have a machine doing it which gets consistently beautiful results.

Their enclosures are powdercoated (on an industrial scale). I am doing powdercoating on a DIY scale and happy to help if you want any tips on that.

I use waterslide decals too and have a love/hate relationship with it.. A printer having problems printing lots of black, not enough prepping gives wrinkles etc, but then again, it can look great.

Me myself can't wait to get into screenprinting. Looks great, more durable, able to drill after etc..

It's not worth it for one-offs I make, as a hobby and the occasional friend that needs a pedal, but for you making more than 1 I think it would work out very nicely.

I don't know if the thread starter Geiri/pedalProjects still hangs around here. He stopped building now. He bought this:

His graphics (and PCBs, well everything) looked great. I think he started a funding for it though, so it can't be cheap.

Re: Show your pedal guts!

Yeah, waterslide decals can be a pain in the ass sometimes. My laserjet printer only prints black, but it does a more than decent enough job in my opinion.
I have no problem whatsoever when I put the decals on the enclosures, but it can be hard. The trick with decals is, is to not cut them too small. You want the edges of the decal really close to the edges of the enclosure.
The reason why I would like to try some other methods is the order of things: with a decal you have to drill the enclosure in advance, and sometimes it can be hard to lineup the decal with the holes. I'd really like to put the artwork on the enclosures first and drill afterwards, but without damaging the artwork.

My girlfriend can screenprint at her school: she's taking evening classes in all kinds of illustration methods, most of those are really just drawing and painting with different kinds of pencils, paints, etc. She also learnt to screenprint and she may use all of the screenprinting stuff (the school provides it).
We're selling the Firefly Fuzzes in handdecorated boxes and the pedal also comes in a small screenprinted cotton bag.
But isn't screenprinting different with metal enclosures (compared to posters or cotton bags or ...)?
And I realized that I just need to talk to my gf about screenprinting.  But it can't hurt to see what other people around here do. :-)

About Geiri/PedalProjects: I assume that the pedals on his page are all laser engraved? They look mighty good! https://www.instagram.com/p/BGPpk3sS95K/ Also, his PCB's are tidy as f*ck. That's another thing I'd like to dig into, if our little pedal "company" grows. As for now, I'm doing everything on stripboard.

@Travis: I still have to catch up on that! I watched the first few minutes, and it seems that it could get really interesting. But I didn't have the time yet to watch the rest, and my gf really wants to watch it too. So yeah, we'll see :)
But you do powdercoat your enclosures? Do you have any links to how it goes from a to z? Isn't it quite expensive? I have no clue at all on how to even get started.
