So... I jumped in the WayBack machine to bring you guys some Vintage Robot Vomit.
First I'll repost an oldie but a goodie, a reminder (and an introduction to those who don't know me) of what sort of chaotic dufus pedal builder I am... The (not quite) Infamous Dare-Stitch Catalinbread CB-30: Ugly: Uglier: This was long ago before it even occurred to me to stock upon stuff and all I had were pieces of stripboard, none big enough to build a pedal. So, yeah, I was on here kind of halfway-joking about stitching some pieces together to make a pedal and someone (forgive me, I don't recall who) commented (correctly) that it was a very bad idea and would almost guarantee issues. Challenge (was) accepted. Works perfectly. :D |
and now one I haven't posted (that I recall).
The FuzzBlaster (Way Huge Piercing Moose octave fuzz: ALAKAZAM! Robot Vomit! No robots were harmed in the making of this pedal, other than some induced vomiting. |

Heath, love those stitches. I've had the impulse to do that a few times, but mostly so I could get the board size in half so I could stack them to fit in a smaller enclosure. Never actually went through with it though!

hey travis, do you use solid core wire for your offboard. it all looks very obedient and bent to your will. if old mother hubbard had been a snake charmer that's what my inside wiring looks like. traumatic. when people ask me what sort of wire i use for my offboard connections i tell them 'feral'. re the 'controls: what and where?' i meant the knobbage. those fabulous old black dial knobs. where do you find them? (ps. judging by the size of her family, i think it's a pretty safe bet old mother hubbard was a snake charmer, and all power to her). |
MUahahahaah! |

Here is the first PCB I ever tried... maybe 4 years ago (that's, like, 25 years ago in Pedal Building years) It's a Fuzzface variant from guitarpcb.com that includes a charge pump in the pcb for powering it with -9v.
The filthy germ-laden transistors are 2n404a and it's been so long I don't recall the hfe measurements. I call him Raul, the passive-aggressive fuzz face... that good natured expression hides a dark and tortured soul... ...and this is why you should love heat-shrink tubing with all your heart and never ever buy cheap electrical tape. I think, one day soon, I'll go back, and remove that stomp and wire one back in a bit less shitty looking... maybe reduce it to just Robot Reflux (hey! that's a great pedal name!) |

I found those knobs at a hardware store believe it or not. I was looking for some stuff for work and stumbled upon those bad boys. Then I found them on mouser and bought 100. I encourage you to look through all the knobs at mouser, etc. They have cool stuff that nobody uses but on average they cost a lot more than the Chinese knobs that you see on eBay and Tayda etc
I use stranded wire. I get it from smallbear, their wire is nice

Deprofundis Delay with modulation board. Once I tested it, I couldn't wait to box it! Didn't have any other enclosures so...
No problem after all! Decal and box was hastily designed and done, and probably needs some smaller knobs You can see tha on the mainboard I miscounted the columns and got wires going up on one side and down on the pther! Really enjoyed building this and I love playing it! |

I'm a fan of the TI 2N404 for fuzz faces. Love the facial expression lol the eyes on the knobs are a nice touch

Zanius, that's impressive as hell!
I agree, though, from a usability standpoint, smaller knobs might be good. There are some nice press-on "synth" type knobs out there that have worked very well for me when space is restricted, ie: that's on a 1590b enclosure. Tayda has them in primary black and grey with an assortment of secondary colors. The Davies 1900h knobs are "okay" for limited space but they all seem pretty weak. The screw they use to secure doesn't have a lot of material to go through so they often crack on me when barely tightening them. |
It's been a spell since I posted a gut shot so here goes a modified Nurse Quacky
Almost complete - Board designed be me etc.
Yeah, 220, 221. Whatever it takes.

A random unbranded metal can jfet -
I didnt hAve any 5458s. A 5457 was working but I swapped it with an unbranded random metal can jfet. Just lucked out that it was the right parameters. |
An original taken from a very small circuit into this; a massivly loud and hugely high gain stomp.
Yeah, 220, 221. Whatever it takes.
|
And my version of a TS9 /808 dual board for either. Ill up the gutshot later on.
The exteriors are inspired by the work of JohnK.
Yeah, 220, 221. Whatever it takes.
